Importance and types of donation
There is immense glory of charity in the scriptures and the number of things to be given in charity is also innumerable, but the special thing in it is that the donor should have ownership rights in the thing given. The number of some items of donation among men and women has also come in fixed form, like sixteen Mahadan, Dasdan, Ashta Daan, Panchdhenu Daan etc. Here is a brief discussion of the sixteen great gifts.
Once upon a time, the sages asked a question to Sutji, O Sutji! In all the scriptures, it has been said to earn wealth righteously, increase it with good efforts, protect it and donate it to the deserving person, then please tell which is that charity, by doing which a person becomes successful? Sutji became very happy after hearing the question of the sages and
Said-Sages! That donation is not a normal donation but is called a great donation. He is the best charity, he is the destroyer of all sins and the destroyer of nightmares ‘Sarvapapakshayakaram nrinaam dusswapna nashanam’. (Matsyapuran 274. 4) Lord Vishnu has described that great donation as divided into sixteen forms in the earth. All those sixteen donations are virtuous, sacred, provide long life, destroyer of all sins and extremely auspicious. Those donations are worshiped by gods like Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh etc.
Yat Tat Shodashadha Proktam Vasudevan Bhootale. Punyaam pavitramayushyam sarvapapaharam shubham ॥ The worshiped deity is Bhishcha Brahma Vishnu Shivadibhi.
(Matsyapu 274. 5-6)
There is great glory in these donations. The result that is achieved by doing these things is definitely there; One who selflessly makes these sixteen great donations does not have to come to this mortal world again, he becomes free.
Shodashaitaani yah kuryanmahadanani manavah.
Na tasya repetition rih loke bhi jate ॥
(Matsyapu 289.16)
These sixteen donations are as follows
