Actually, there are many pilgrimage places of Lord Mahadev. But do you know that there is also a pilgrimage place where there is a self-proclaimed Shivalinga. The Shivalinga enshrined in Jageshwar Dham located at Bandakpur in Bundelkhand has remained the center of wonder for people for years. This year too, a huge crowd is gathering in Bandakpur, the city of Lord Jageshwar Nath, during the month of Shravan. Due to its mystical, historical, religious and spiritual importance, Bandakpur Dham has got the status of “Puri”. Let us know about this pilgrimage place.
yaahimag hvakar gaye dandak van shree raam,
yahaan shambhoo poojan kiyo aroo keenho vishraam.
This verse is as simple as it seems to read. Its meaning is equally deep. Which shows the ancient importance of Bandakpur Dham. This verse has been written in the book named “Bandakpur Jageshwar Rahasyam” written by Bandakpur’s famous scholar poet Bhairav Prasad Bajpai in 1940. The description of which comes in the Tantra Jageshwar Linga Shri Ramen Swapujita of Skanda Purana Kumarika section.Which means that during the exile in Tretayuga, when Lord Shri Ram and his younger brother Lakshman were going towards Dandakaranya in search of Mother Sita from Panchvati, they had worshiped this self-proclaimed Shivling Lord Jageshwar Nath. And also had a night rest here. From this verse it is proved that Lord Jageshwar Nath has been giving darshan to his devotees since Treta Kaal (second era of mankind).
Chandorkar had re-construction: Bandakpur Dham is built towards Katni railway line, 18 kilometers away from Damoh district headquarters. It is famous as the abode of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Many stories and memoirs here are full of miracles. Before the construction of the temple, only Lord Shiva was present here in the form of a huge Swayambhu Linga. About 300 years ago, during the Maratha period i.e. in 1711 AD, the Diwan of Maratha state Balaji Rao Chandorkar had rebuilt the temple.
Jyotirlinga of Jageshwar Nath was found during excavation: British writer RV Russell has mentioned in the Gazetteer (descriptive description of a particular area) of 1906 that Balaji Rao Chandorkar was given direct darshan by Lord Jageshwar Nath and ordered to build the temple. Then Balajirao reached here with his servants and dug near the present stepwell and found the Jyotirlinga of Jageshwar Nath.More excavations were done to take out the Jyotirling but after digging for 30 feet, when the end of the Jyotirling was not found anywhere, the digging was stopped. Then Lord Shiva told Balaji in the dream that I have appeared to show miracles. Therefore, build a temple at this place. Then he got a huge temple built. Which had collapsed over time. Subsequently, in 1972, the temple of Mata Parvati was constructed just in front of the Shiva temple. (Shiv Temple Bandakpur Damoh)
Other gods are also present along with Bholenath: Just in front of the temple of Lord Bholenath, the temple of Mother Parvati is situated. Apart from this, Nandi Maharaj is sitting in the middle of these two temples, Rudra is in front, Lord Ganesha is sitting on the other side, Hanuman ji is sitting next to him. Right behind the Shiva temple is Lord Radha Krishna, on the right hand side is the court of Lord Lakshmi Narayan Narmada Ji, on one side behind the Parvati temple is the court of Lord Ram. And on the other side, Kaal Bhairav and Maa Jagadamba are seated in front of him. Similarly, Lord Bholenath is seated on a horse inside the Parvati temple. Who is known as Khanderao Dev in Maratha society. In this way, about nine temples are built in the complex. In front of the Shiva temple, there is a huge stepwell on the left side which is known as Imarti Kund.It is said that the water of this pond never becomes empty. When Balajirao reached this place in 1711 on the orders of Lord Shiva, he meditated on the Lord under a tree near this Imarti Kund. This proves that Imarti Kund is also many centuries old.
