Historicity of ‘Kaleshwar Nath’ of Kannauj
‘Kannauj’ of Uttar Pradesh is that historical city, whose name is remembered as soon as Prithviraj Chauhan, Alhaudal and Emperor Harsh, of this place which is the center point of Kanojia Vipras, not only the ancient but also the modern history of this place comes to the fore. Kannauj, the city of perfume and history, has many such places in its lap. By peeling away the layers of historical elements that are preserved, new facts become known to the future generations.
There are numerous Shiva temples situated on this side of the banks of Ganga, among which the sixth century Baba Gaurishankar Temple, seventh century Baba Kaleshwar Nath Temple and Baba Vishwanath Temple are prominent. Today Baba Kaleshwar Nath Temple has its own specialty among the ancient Siddha Shiva temples.
After Emperor Harsha, Yashovarman became the emperor of Kannauj around the year 725, who himself was a learned Sanskrit poet and playwright. Sanskrit scholar Hartel has written on pages 12, 13 of the first volume of his book Asia Major that the plays Malti Madhav Uttar Ramcharitra and Mahavir Charit of Bhavabhuti were composed for the religious pilgrims in the Kalpriyanath temple of Kannauj.What we know today as Kaleshwar Nath Temple, at that time this temple was famous by the name of Kalpriya Nath.
