There is no dearth of temples of historical importance in India. There is also a temple at that place in Meerut metropolis of western Uttar Pradesh which was called Kali Paltan because of the Indian Army during the British times. When it comes to Meerut city, the many ancient heritages present here remain in the hearts and minds. The ancient heritage of the city is very rich, some know it by the name of Ravana’s in-laws house and some know it by the name of the demon Mayrashtra, the king of Asuras. In this series, the ancient and famous Baba Aughadnath temple, which is witness to the most glorious history of Meerut, is also included. The miniature Shivalinga established in the temple is the self-proclaimed form of Lord Shiva, the giver of fruits and the granter of wishes.
Augharnath Temple: For this reason it was named Augharnath Shiva Temple. Located in the cantonment area of Meerut, this temple is generally known by the name of Kali Paltan. Every year during the Kanwar Yatra, the beauty of the temple is worth seeing, this temple also holds special importance for the Kanwariyas on Shivratri.
Peshwa used to worship
There is no definite time available for the establishment of this temple. According to popular belief, it existed as a famous and revered place before 1857. During the time of brave Marathas, many prominent Peshwas used to visit this temple before the Vijay Yatra and worship and worship Lord Shankar with great devotion.
The temple is made of white marble, on which excellent carvings have been done at various places. The main temple in the middle is dedicated to Baba Bholenath and Maa Parvati whose peak is very high. The Kalash is installed on top of that peak. In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, gentle life-size idols of God and Bhagwati are installed and in the middle below, Shiva family is present with Siddha Shivalinga. A huge statue of his vehicle Nandi bull is installed just outside its northern gate. There is very beautiful glass work done on the pavilion and ceiling inside the sanctum sanctorum.
Due to its proximity to the Hindustani battalions, many freedom fighters used to come and stay in this temple and hold secret consultations with the officers of the Hindustani battalions.
Among these, Haathiwale Baba held a special place. It is said that he was Dhudhpant Nana Saheb. The arrival of new cartridges for guns in 1856 also became the main reason for the first movement of independence.
Before using these cartridges, they were opened through the mouth which were smeared with cow fat, due to which the then priest of the temple refused to give water to the army soldiers. Therefore, even before the scheduled 31st May, the agitated army soldiers sounded the bugle of revolution against the British on 10th May, 1857.
Near the temple is the memorial of the martyrs of the first freedom struggle.
The Martyr Memorial established by the then conqueror of Bangladesh Major General Jagjit Singh Arora on a historical well built in the temple is a vivid symbol of the glorious past of the revolution. Even today, every year on 10th May, the freedom fighters of India gather and hold a conference by paying floral tributes to the martyrs.
Old people know that till 1944, there was a small neat Shiva temple in the forest of trees in the training center and a well (in the form of a pond) near it.
Temple dedicated to Radha-Krishna
The second temple on the north side of this temple is dedicated to Radha-Krishna, whose peak is also as high as the main temple.
There are many beautiful paintings around the temple. In its sanctum sanctorum, very attractive and grand statues of Radha-Krishna are installed in a beautiful silver pavilion.
A big pavilion is also built outside the sanctum sanctorum.
