Kanchipuram, also known as Kashi, is a city of temples in South India. It is located in Tamil Nadu. Among the thousands of temples in the city, the one that is most famous is the Kamakshi Amma Temple. This temple is spread over an area of about one and a half acres and is one of the major Jyotirlingas of Goddess Sati. Goddess Kamakshi is in Padmasana and her eyes are very beautiful. Kamakshi is the form of Goddess Parvati. In this temple the idol of Tripur Sundari Devi is looking towards the south-east direction.
Situated at Sivakanchi in Kanchipuram, this temple was built by the Pallava kings in the sixth century. Some parts of the temple are in ancient condition, while many parts have been renovated. The temple complex also has a Gayatri Mandapam. It is said that Adi Shankaracharya had a lot of faith in the Kamakshi Devi temple. He built the Sri Chakra here. There are also temples of Annapurna and Sharada Devi in the complex itself.
In the grand temple of Maa Kamakshi there is the idol of Bhagwati Parvati, which is also called Kamakshi Devi or Kamakoti. There is construction work on all four corners of the boundary wall inside the temple complex. A dining room was built on one side of the hall, and a dining room on the other. Similarly, an elephant stand has been built on the third and a school on the fourth.
Time of darshan in the temple: 5.30 am to 12 noon. 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. A huge fair is held here on the occasion of Brahmotsavam and Navaratri.
