Mankapur Gonda: Shiva temple situated in the fish market of Mankapur area is famous by the name of Karohanath since time immemorial.
Shiva devotees from far and wide come to the Karohanath temple located in the fish market of Mankapur throughout the year for religious rituals like Jalabhishek, Rudrabhishek, Mundan. But on the days of Malmas, Sawan month, Shivratri, Kajri Teej, Teras, Ekadashi, Monday etc., there is a continuous flow of devotees of Bholenath.
It is believed that by worshiping Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan, one gets the results of worshiping throughout the year. Here, vows are also made by the Shiva devotees and on completion, Shiva devotees tie the bell, organize Bhagwat Geeta, listen to Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha etc.
The history of the temple is very ancient. It is identified with the Torana Vastu described in the Sthavineet Sukha of the Buddhist literature Majhim Nikaya. Whose position was as the fourth stage of the route from Shravasti to Saket. Lord Buddha preached religion here. According to Theri Gatha Suta of Samyukta Nikaya, King Bimbisara’s queen Khema or Kshema also stayed here.
Apart from this, this place is also related to the salvation of Angulimala. Later, Emperor Ashoka had built a stupa and vihara and a pillar in front of it. By installing the ruins of this pillar in the form of Shivalinga, Gahadwal king Govind Chandra Dev (1110-1156 AD) built a Shiva temple here. Later, King Raghuraj Pratap Singh of Mankapur built a Shiva temple here in 1904 with marble stones.
