The Kedareshwar Cave Temple

The Kedareshwar cave temple is a one-of-a-kind Shiva temple found in the Harishchandragad fort in Ahmednagar. The temple is located in a cave and is always surrounded by water. This makes it one of the most unique temples in India and the world. The temple is devoted to Shiva and features a five-foot-tall Shiva Linga, the cave’s most prominent feature. The Linga is located in the cave’s center and is surrounded by waist-deep water. One must wade through the water to reach the Linga. Even in the summer, the water in the cave is believed to be exceedingly cold.

Pillars of the Kedareshwar Cave Temple

The cave has four remarkable pillars, one of which supports them. According to Hindu cosmology, the four pillars represent the four Yugas or ages. The current pillar symbolises the Kali Yuga or the ultimate period. And this is where the legend of the Kedareshwar temple comes in. It is believed by many that the world will end when the last pillar collapses. This legend is based on the concept that one pillar broke down after each yuga and that when the Kali Yuga ends, the final would also break down, resulting in the world’s end.
