Kutumbheshwar Mahadev (14/84) Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
The story of the establishment of Shri Kutumbheshwar Mahadev shows the compassionate mind of Mahadev and the devotion to duty of Kshipra Maiya. Compassionate Lord Shiva himself took the poison to save the universe from its terrible side effects. Mother Kshipra, following the orders of Shiva, showed amazing devotion to duty without considering the ill effects of the poison.
According to mythology, once the Gods and Goddesses together churned the ocean, as a result of which not only many precious things but also poison were produced from the ocean. Apart from the gods and demons, Yakshaganas also got scared due to the flame of poison and came to seek refuge in Mahadev. All of them together prayed to Mahadev that Mahadev, we had churned the ocean to attain immortality but here poison was produced. Please protect us. Hearing the plight of the gods, Lord Shankar took the form of a peacock and took the poison around his neck. But that poison was so strong that even Lord Shankar became distressed. He told the river Ganga to take this poison and let it flow into the sea. But Ganga expressed her inability. Then Lord Shiva also prayed to the rivers like Yamuna, Saraswati etc. but these rivers also expressed their inability. Ultimately, Lord Shiva requested the Kshipra River to take this poison and install it in the linga in front of Kameshwar situated in the Mahakal forest.
On the orders of Mahadev, the Kshipra river took that poison and placed it on the Linga located in the Mahakal forest. Due to the effect of the poison, that penis became asymmetrical and the result was that any living being who saw it would die. Once some Brahmins came there on pilgrimage. They saw that Linga and they too died. Then there was an uproar in all three worlds. When Mahadev came to know about this, he went to the Brahmins and brought them back to life with his divine vision. Then those Brahmins requested Mahadev that O Devadhidev Mahadev, people die after seeing this Linga, please remove this defect. Then Lord Shiva said that soon people of Brahmin Lakulish lineage will come here, after that this Linga will become touchable and worshipable and whoever comes to visit here, his family will increase and it will be known as Kutumbheshwar. Thereafter, the Brahmins of Lakulish dynasty came there and remembering Lord Shiva, they worshiped that Linga, after which the Linga became free from the effect of poison.
