Only Lakshmana could kill Meghnad…
What was the reason? Read the full story.
The tale of Hanumanji’s devotion to Rama is sung throughout the world. Lakshmana’s devotion was also remarkable. The story of Shri Ram is incomplete without Lakshmana’s tale. Sage Agastya arrived in Ayodhya and the topic of the Lankan war arose.

Lord Shri Ram told how he killed mighty warriors like Ravana and Kumbhakarna and how Lakshman also killed powerful demons like Indrajit and Atikaya.

Agastya Muni said – Shri Ram, undoubtedly Ravana and Kumbhakarna were very brave, but Meghnad was the greatest warrior. He fought with Indra from space, bound him and brought him to Lanka.
Indra was freed when Brahma asked Indrajit for Indra as a donation. Lakshmana killed him, making him the greatest warrior.

Sri Rama was surprised, but pleased with the praise for his brother’s bravery. Yet, he was curious as to why sage Agastya was saying that killing Indrajit was more difficult than killing Ravana.

Sage Agastya said, “Lord Indrajit had a boon that only he could kill…

(1) who had not slept for fourteen years,

(2) who had not seen a woman’s face for fourteen years, and

(3) who had not eaten food for fourteen years.”

Shri Ram said, “But during my exile, I regularly gave Lakshmana his share of fruits and flowers for fourteen years. I lived in a hut with Sita, and Lakshmana was in the adjacent hut. How is it possible that I did not see Sita’s face and did not sleep for fourteen years?”

Sage Agastya, understanding everything, smiled. Is there anything hidden from the Lord? In reality, everyone sang the praises of Lord Rama, but the Lord wanted Lakshmana’s penance and valor to be discussed in every household in Ayodhya.

Sage Agastya said, “Why not ask Lakshmana?”

When Lakshmana came, the Lord said, “Whatever you are asked, tell me the truth.”

The Lord asked, “We three lived together for fourteen years, so how come you didn’t see Sita’s face? How come you were given fruits and yet you remained hungry? And you didn’t sleep for fourteen years? How did this happen?”

Lakshmana said, “Brother, when we went to Rishyamook mountain in search of our sister-in-law, Sugreev showed us her ornaments and asked us to identify her.”

You will remember that I could not recognize any jewellery except the anklets on her feet because I never looked above her feet.

Listen to the story about not sleeping for fourteen years – you and mother slept in a hut. I stood guard outside all night, bow and arrow. When sleep tried to overtake my eyes, I pierced it with my arrows.

Defeated, Nidra accepted that she would not touch me for fourteen years, but when Shri Ram’s coronation would be taking place in Ayodhya and I would be standing behind him like a servant holding an umbrella, then she would surround me.

You may remember that the umbrella fell from my hand during the coronation.

Now, how did I remain without food for 14 years? You would divide the fruits and flowers I brought into three parts. After giving me one part, you would say, “Lakshman, keep the fruit.”
You never asked me to eat the fruit—so how could I eat it without your permission?

I kept them safely. All the fruits must still be stored in that hut. At the Lord’s command, Lakshman brought the basket of fruits from his hut in Chitrakoot and placed it in the court. The fruits were counted, but there was not enough for seven days.

The Lord said, “Does this mean you ate for seven days?”

Lakshmana explained the missing seven fruits, saying, “No fruits were produced during those seven days.”

1–The day we received the news of our father’s death, we remained without food.

2–Who would go to fetch fruits on the day Ravana abducted our mother?

3–The day you were praying to the ocean and asking for directions.

4–The day you remained unconscious all day after being bound in Indrajit’s serpent noose.

5–The day Indrajit killed the illusory Sita and we mourned.

6–The day Meghnad struck me with his Shakti.

7–And the day you killed Ravana.

During these days, we had no time for food. I had learned an additional knowledge from sage Vishwamitra—the art of living without food. Using it, I was able to control my hunger for fourteen years, which ultimately led to the death of Indrajit.

Lord Shri Ram, after hearing about Lakshman ji’s penance, embraced him with all his heart.

Jai Jai Shri Ram
