Gotra ● Wherever the lineage of a person of any lineage starts, the Gotra of that lineage becomes popular in its name, everyone knows that a Brahmin person is the descendant of some sage or the other, thus the society which is related to the sage. Started, he is said to be a descendant of that sage’s gotra. For example, the lineage that started from sage Vashishtha is called their gotra Vashishtha.

Gotras first originated in the Brahmin class. When the Brahmin class expanded, to establish their identity they created gotras in the name of their ancestors. The great sages of these gotras – Angira, Bhrigu. There were Atri, Kashyap, Vashishtha, Agastya and Kaushik.

In this way, the people who became great among the people who became great after the founder of Gotra, Bhool Rishi, are called ‘Pravara’ of that Gotra.

Vedas ● The compositions of the Vedas originated from the conscience of the sages, at the time of the origin of the Vedas, the art of writing had not been invented, hence the Veda mantras were read or memorized by listening. Since no single sage could memorize all the four Vedas. Therefore, the burden of protecting the verses which the sages of the Gotra studied, taught, propagated and published fell on that Gotra. After this, the responsibility of protecting it remains on his children only. Therefore, it is important for every Brahmin to know the names of Vedas.

Branch ● When the sages of a particular Gotra established the tradition of studying one Veda for each Gotra, and when a person from one Gotra became unable to completely study the ‘Veda’ prescribed for that Gotra, then the sages started the Vedic tradition. To keep them alive, branches were created, thus making it necessary for each gotra to fully study any branch of its Veda.

Sutras ● When it became difficult for Gautra followers to study any one branch of the Veda, the later sages converted the branches into subtle, sutra form, thus it is essential for every Gautra follower to know his sutra.

Branch ● The tradition of tying a braid was introduced for every Brahmin to maintain his identity according to his gotra. In some Gotras the knot was tied from the right side and in others from the left side.

Paad ● Paad is also a tradition of maintaining the identity of one’s lineage. Some Gotra people wash their right foot first, while some Gotra people wash their left foot first.

Deities ● Those who study each Veda or branch worship a branch deity, that is their family deity.

Original place ● The original place where the Gotrakars lived and started their dynasty was called their original place or rule and the identity of their Gotra was based on this.
