According to mythological belief, the Barhiya village is believed to have been established during the period of the Pala dynasty. Pandit Shridhar Ojha was a native of Barhiya. After establishing Maa Vaishno Devi while doing penance in a Himalayan cave, he established Maa Jagdamba in Barhiya. At that time, Ganga used to flow to the east of Barhiya village and Haruhar river to the west and this area was surrounded by forests. Hundreds of poisonous snakes also used to migrate. Devotee Shiromani Shridhar Ojha worshipped the Goddess to get rid of the deaths of villagers due to snake bites. Hearing the call of the devotee, Maa Bala Tripur Sundari appeared. Shridhar Ojha asked the mother to relieve him from snakebite. Maa Bala Tripur Sundari told him the remedy to get rid of snakebite. Devotee Shridhar Ojha established the mother in Barhiya and started treating people suffering from snakebite with the mantra given by Maa Bala Tripur Sundari.
