Share

Shri Ugratara Mandir, Mahishi, Saharsa is situated at a distance of about 17 Kms west of Saharsa station in Mahishi village. In this ancient temple, the idol of Bhagwati Tara is said to be very old and draws devotees from far and wide. On either side of the main deity, there are two smaller female deities which are worshipped by the people as Ekjata and Nil Saraswati.

Mahishi’s Ugratara temple is famous for Tantra Sadhna

Among the famous Shakti Sthals of Bihar, Ugratara Sthan situated in Mahishi of Saharsa district is prominent. Adi Shankaracharya had a debate here with Vidushi Bharti, wife of Mandan Mishra, in which Shankaracharya had to face defeat. This Shakti Sthal, located 16 km away from Saharsa, is visited by devotees throughout the year but during the Navaratri days and every Tuesday, there is a huge crowd of devotees here.

According to Shakti Purana, Shiva was roaming around the universe like a madman carrying the dead body of Mahamaya Sati. Fearing the doomsday that would happen due to this, Vishnu divided the dead body of Mahamaya into 52 parts with his Sudarshan. The place where the part of Sati’s body fell on the ground became famous as Siddha Peeth. Regarding Mahishi Ugratara place, it is believed that the left eye of Sati fell here.
