Mahabaleshwar/Mahabal Parvat
Mahabaleshwar is a city located in Satara district of Maharashtra state, India. There is also a taluka headquarters of the same name. The nearest source here is the Krishna River, which is why it is a Hindu pilgrimage site. Surrounded by the delightful environment of the Western Ghats, Mahabaleshwar is also a hill station and tourist attraction.
Description
Mahabaleshwar is located in southwestern Maharashtra state, western India. Mahabaleshwar is located at an altitude of 1,438 meters in the Sahyadri Hills of the Western Ghats, 64 kilometers south-east of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and northwest of Satara city.Mahabaleshwar city offers a panoramic view of the coastal Konkan plains from the slopes of high ridged hills. Strawberries and other fruits of the temperate zone are grown here. Nearby Panchgani is noted for its public schools, fruit preserving and processing industries.
History
Recognized in ancient times as the origin of the Krishna River and its four main tributaries, this place is considered a pilgrimage site by Hindus. The old part of this city is mostly inhabited by Brahmins, whose livelihood depends on pilgrims. The British explored the possibilities of this area and established the modern city as a hill station in 1828. Earlier it was called Malcompeth after the name of the Governor of the British East India Company.
If we look at the past history of Mahabaleshwar, around 1215, King Singhan of Devagiri gifted the old Mahabaleshwar and built a small temple and a reservoir near the waterfall on the banks of river Krishna. In the 16th century, Chandrarao More, this Marathi family, defeated the earlier royal family and became the king of Javali and Mahabaleshwar.This temple was rebuilt during that period. In the 17th century, Shivaji Maharaj took control of Javali and Mahabaleshwar and built Pratapgad Fort in 1656.
In 1819, the British brought together all the hilly states of Satara. Colonel Lodwick was the local officer of Satar. In April 1824, he reached this point with all the soldiers of the department, Indians and assistants of the division, hence it is now known as Lodwick Point. From 1828, Sir John Malcolm, Sir Mount Stuart Elphinstone, Arthur Mallet, Karnak, Frere and many others visited. Mahabaleshwar Identified in 1929–30.
