Mahakal/Mahakaleshwar Temple Udaipur, Rajasthan
Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the famous temples of Udaipur. It is located near Fateh Sagar Lake opposite Panna Vilas, with the Aravalli Hills in the background. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Mahakala) and is believed to be more than 900 years old. The main shrine of this beautifully carved temple has a Shivalinga made of black stone. Aarti is performed daily in the temple, but Rudrabhishek Aarti is the most special one which attracts a large number of devotees. There are also several other smaller temples dedicated to other deities in the complex.
Beliefs on Mahakaleshwar Temple
Guru Gorakhnath, a famous devotee of Lord Shiva and a popular saint, is also believed to have worshiped here. This temple is spread over an area of approximately 3.5 acres. Every year a huge crowd of devotees of Lord Shiva gather in this temple. The main puja here is Rudrabhishek Aarti. According to folklore, Guru Gorakhnath, a popular saint and an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, had worshiped at this religious site.
