Story of origin of Shivalinga
It is said that in the seventeenth century, Nepal’s King Mahendravir was suffering from leprosy. To get relief from this disease, the King of Nepal was coming to Varanasi to take bath in Ganga. During this journey, he took rest under a Peepal tree in the dense forest. This forest is currently in Siwan district. At that time the King of Nepal felt very thirsty. He started wandering here and there in search of water. Then they found a pit. As soon as the King of Nepal put his hand in the pit to drink water, his leprosy was cured by the grace of Lord Shiva.
Knowing this, the King of Nepal took bath with that water, which cured his leprosy. The same night, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and said – Get digging done under the Peepal tree and build a temple. After this, the King of Nepal got the excavation done at this place, from which Shivalinga was found. A temple was built at this place, which today people know as Mahendranath Temple. Whereas a huge reservoir was dug near the temple, in which hundreds of people take a dip of faith every day.
