History and story of Riktya Bhairav Temple of Malasi

Riktya Bhairu Temple Malasi History in Hindi: The temple of Malasi Bhairav (Riktya Bhairav) is located in Malasi village of Sujangarh tehsil of Churu district in Rajasthan. Riktya Bhairu is also called Malasi Bhairu by the name of the place which is more famous among the people. Riktya Bhairu has special recognition in Churu, Bikaner, Jhunjhunu, Sikar and Jaipur districts of Rajasthan, from where devotees come to pay obeisance here. The distance of Malasi from the famous Balaji temple of Salasar is 15 kilometers.

Malasi village is the in-laws house of Riktya Bhairu. His other famous temple is also in his birthplace village named Khirod situated in Nawalgarh tehsil of Jhunjhunu district. Apart from these, the worshipers of Riktya Bhairu have also established his temples and deities in many places like Jodhpur etc.

History of Riktya Bhairu
Riktaram Jat of Khirod was married to the daughter of Malaram Dahiya Jat of Malasi. It is said that this village was established by Malaram and it was by his name that its name Malasi became famous. Riktaram’s nature was cheerful and tactful. Once he had come to his in-laws’ house to pick up his wife. In the evening the women of the family started singing songs. Riktaram’s brothers and sisters-in-law thought of a joke. They took Riktaram to the village well and hanged him upside down in the well. In this joke, Riktaram slipped out of his hands and fell into the well. He died in this accident. The people of the village gathered and unanimously decided that Riktaram had been sacrificed as a symbol of love, hence he would be worshiped as a folk deity. Since then Riktaram Jat started being worshiped as Bhairunji Maharaj.

Local people started shaving their children’s hair and new brides and grooms started coming to this Bhairunji with wishes for a happy married life. And gradually this circle of devotees started increasing.

The statue is upside down on the well

His temple is built on the well here. Since Riktaram died by hanging upside down in the well, his upside down statue was installed in the well itself and he started being worshiped in the well itself. Till many years ago, devotees used to worship Bhairon by bowing in this well and offering Prasad etc. But now due to the large crowd of devotees, the well has been closed for safety and a temple has been built over it. Now people offer Prasad and children’s hair to a stone statue where there was a well.

Temple of Recognition
One section of devotees of Riktya Bhairu believes in the temple of Malasi while others believe in the temple of his birthplace Khirod. But, in both the Dhams, huge fairs are held on Chaitra and Ashwin Navratri and other special occasions. According to belief, many devotees come here every month on the Sunday of Shukla Paksha. Devotees also come from Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat. The descendants of Riktya Bhairu still live in Khirod.

Rajput family is a priest
The priests of this temple are from Rajput family. Since the well in which Riktaram Jat died after falling belonged to this Rajput family, hence later this family also took the responsibility of worshiping here. When the number of devotees continued to increase, the people of Jat community tried to take over this well and the temple and then a fight broke out over it in which some people even died. Since then there is constant police surveillance here.
