There is a 300 year old Yamraj temple in Gwalior. Where Yamraj is seated with Lord Shiva and Markande Rishi. Which is known as Markandeshwar Mahadev Temple. This is the only temple in the state where Yamraj is worshipped. Along with this, a day before Diwali, people come to worship on Narak Chaudas to save themselves from hell and to avoid suffering in the last moments.

The priest of Markandeshwar Mahadev temple told that Rishi Mukund had no children. After which, by worshiping Lord Shiva, he got a child whom he named Markand. Markandeya was a young boy whose age was 12 years. But he was an ardent devotee of Shiva and spent most of his time worshiping Shiva. Similarly, when his last time came, he was worshiping the Lord. When Yamraj himself came to take him, he said that you wait for a while, let me complete the worship of God. But Yamraj did not agree and he threw his Brahmapass to take the life of Markand, then Markand caught hold of Shivling with force. Seeing this condition of his devotee, Lord Shiva himself came out of Pindi. Not only this, while on one hand Mahadev got angry and punished Yamraj, on the other hand he made his devotee immortal.

Temple priest Bhargava told that this temple was established about 300 years ago by Santaji Rao Temak. He had made a vow that if he had a child, he would get a temple built here. When she had a child, she asked for a place for the temple from the then Scindia Maharaj. On which the Scindia family not only gave space but also cooperated in the establishment of the temple.

Special worship of Yamraj is done 3 days throughout the year. The maximum worship is done on the day of Makar Sankranti. After this, special worship is done on the day of Narak Chaudas. So that people can get relief from hell and also get relief from many diseases. Apart from this, special worship is also done here on Yama Dwitiya.
