This temple has special significance in Mahashivratri, it was established by Lord Brahma himself.

Lord Ram resided in Chitrakoot only after his permission. Lord Shiva is the king of Chitrakoot since the expansion of creation. It is believed that it was established by Lord Brahma himself. A temple of Bhole Shankar, famous by the name of Maharajadhiraj Matyagjendra Nath, is built at Ramghat of Mandakini River, where lakhs of devotees come to offer water. By offering Belpatra and flowers to Bhole Baba, all the wishes of a person are fulfilled.

In the Matyagjendra Nath temple of Chitrakoot, every devotee offers Belpatra to Bholenath with Ram-Ram written on it. Bholenath bestows his blessings on him and fulfills all his wishes. Belpatra with Ram-Ram written on it is offered to Lord Shri Mahadev here along with milk and water. The glory of Lord Shiva is unmatched in Chitrakoot, Lord Shiva has been established in all four directions.

Devotees start coming to the Matagjendra Nath temple located on the Mandakini coast of UP border in Chitrakoot district from the night itself. It is believed here that Shivalinga itself was established by Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. There are 4 Shivalingas here. Devotee Ajit Singh said, this is the first place in India, where 4 Shivalingas are present together. Here Lord Bholenath is considered the ruler of Chitrakoot.
