Matsgyendranath (Matyagajendra Nath)
On his orders, Shri Ram spent 11 years of exile in Chitrakoot.

The identity of the religious city Chitrakoot is associated with Lord Shri Ram. But here at Ramghat on the banks of Maa Mandakini, there is the world famous ancient Matyagjendra Nath Shiva temple.The history of the temple is four ages old. The glory of the established Shivalinga is also described in Shivpuran. It is believed that the Shivalinga established in this temple was established by Lord Brahma himself with his own hands. It is said that Lord Brahma performed Yagya at this place. The Shivalinga that emerged due to the effect of Yagya is known as Swami Matyagjendra Nath.

In the second chapter of the eighth section of Shivpuran, there is a description about Lord Gajendranath. On the orders of Lord Vishnu, Brahma ji performed a yagya on the holy mountain of Chitrakoot, from which Shivalinga emerged.The same Shivalinga is installed in the temple. A large number of devotees come here to perform Jalabhishek. The person who takes bath in Mandakini in the morning and worships Matyagjendra Nath, all his wishes are fulfilled.
Lord Ram had performed Jalabhishek
It is said that in Treta Yuga, when Lord Ram came to Chitrakoot for exile, he took permission from Matyagjendra Nath and spent 11 and a half years in Chitrakoot. After taking bath in Mandakini, Ram used to perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva seated on the bank. Jalabhishek has special significance in the temple.
Crowd gathers in Saavan
Shiv temple is at a very picturesque place in Chitrakoot, the exile place of Lord Shri Ram. Every devotee coming here has darshan of the Shivalinga present in the Matya Gajendranath temple, but the importance of darshan here increases further in the month of Shravan. Crowds of devotees throng this temple for a month for Jalabhishek.
