This temple is situated in Dabripitha, a densely populated area of the city, through narrow streets. Its four and a half feet high east facing gate is made of stone frame outside and has a steel gate inside. In the sanctum sanctorum, an 8 inches high Linga covered with the shape of a snake is installed on a brass platform about 2 feet wide.
On which a snake is shadowing. A 2 feet high brass trident is buried. In the sanctum sanctorum, on the right side, there are stone made panoramic statues of Kartikeya and in front of Goddess Parvati, while on the left side there is a vermilion decorated Ganesha statue.
Mahadev told the story to Parvati that in the past in Rathantara Kalpa, Rudrabhakta Nupur went to Kuber’s court to watch the festival of Apsaras and, inspired by lust, started dancing among them.
Kubera got angry and made him fall into the human world. The same Gana went to you in great lamentation and asked him to worship a special Linga in the auspicious Mahakalvan. After reaching there, he saw the Linga served by Dev-Gandharva. Prachi Saraswati was present there in the shape of Vapi.
Pleased with this puja, Mahadev wished for the well-being of Nupur. He became full of Tejrashi for the Gana deities also. The Gods said that Nupur achieved success just by seeing the Linga, hence this Linga will be popularly known as Nupureshwar.
One who visits Nupureshwar after bathing in Vapi will attain supreme status. Those who worship with devotion will remain happy in heaven till the end and birth, death, old age, disease and various sorrows will disappear forever.
