Parshuram Avatar
Parashurama, son of Renuka, daughter of King Prasenjit and Jamadagni of Bhrigu dynasty, was an incarnation of Vishnu and a great devotee of Shiva. He had received a special Parshu from Shiva. His name was Ram, but because he always held the infallible sword given by Shankar, he was called Parashuram.
The sixth incarnation out of the ten incarnations of Vishnu, which is counted between Vaman and Ramchandra. Being the son of Jamdagni, he is also called Jamdagni.
His mother went to the river with a water urn to fill it. There Gandharva Chitrarath was playing water sports with Apsaras. Renuka became so engrossed in seeing him that there was a delay in bringing water and the time for the yagya was lost. Understanding his mental condition, Parashurama’s father Jamdagni, in a fit of anger, asked his four sons to kill him. No one was ready except Parshuram. So Jamdagni made everyone unconscious. Parashuram obeyed his father’s orders and beheaded his mother.
When the father was pleased and asked for a boon, he asked for four boons –
1. Mother should be revived,
2. They have no memory of dying,
3. Brother, become conscious and
May I be eternal.
Jamdagni gave him all four boons.
• Like Durvasa, Parashuram is also famous for his angry nature. Once Kartavirya had destroyed the ashram in Parashurama’s absence, due to which Parashurama got angry and cut off his thousand arms. Kartavirya’s relatives killed Jamdagni out of revenge. On this Parashurama depopulated the earth 21 times (each time the wives of the slain Kshatriyas survived and gave birth to a new generation) and filled five lakes with blood.
Finally after hearing the voice of the ancestors He stopped fighting with the Kshatriyas and concentrated on penance.
• He came in anger when Ramchandra broke Shiva’s bow in Ramavatar. He gave his bow to Ramchandra for examination. When Ram offered the bow, Parashuram understood that Ramchandra was the incarnation of Vishnu. Therefore, after worshiping him, he went to do penance.
