The Pashupatinath Temple is a famous, sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Pashupatinath and is located on the banks of the Bagmati River 5 kilometres north-east of Kathmandu Valley in the eastern city of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. This temple is considered one of the sacred temples of Hindu faith. The temple serves as the seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. This temple complex is on UNESCO World Heritage Sites’s list Since 1979. This “extensive Hindu temple precinct” is a “sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions raised over the centuries along the banks of the sacred Bagmati river” and is included as one of the seven monument groups in UNESCO’s designation of Kathmandu Valley as a cultural heritage site. One of the major Festivals of the temple is Maha Shivaratri on which day over 700,000 devotees visit here.

Kotirudra Samhita, Chapter 11 on the Shivalingas of the North, in Shiva Purana mentions this Shivalinga as the bestower of all wishes.

Pashupatinath Linga Vigraha has four faces in four directions and a fifth face in the upper part. Each face has a Rudraksha rosary in its right hand and a Kamandal in its left hand. Each face reveals different qualities. The first face is ‘Aghor’ face, which is towards the south. The east face is called ‘Tatpurusha’. The north facing form is ‘Ardhanarishwar’. The western face is called ‘Sadyojat’. The upper part is called ‘Ishan’ mouth. This is a formless mouth. This is considered to be the best face of Lord Pashupatinath.
If we look at the history, it is known that since 1747, the kings of Nepal have invited Indian Brahmins to serve God in the Pashupatinath temple. The fact said to be behind this is that Indian Brahmins are more versed in Hindu theology and customs. Later a king of the ‘Malla Dynasty’ appointed a South Indian Brahmin as the chief priest of the ‘Pashupatinath Temple’. South Indian Bhatt Brahmins have been appointed as the head priests of this temple.
There is no certified history of the construction of the temple, but at some places it is definitely written that the temple was built by Pashupreksha of the Somdev dynasty in the third century BC.
Some historians consider the Pashupat sect to be associated with the establishment of this temple. Pashupati was the presiding deity of the ancient rulers of the Kathmandu Valley. In 605 AD, Amshuvarman considered himself blessed by touching the feet of the Lord. Later, many copies of the temple were built till the Middle Ages. Such temples include those at Bhaktapur (1480), Lalitpur (1566) and Banaras (early 19th century). The original temple has been destroyed several times. King Bhupalendra Malla gave it its present form in 1697.
