Pataleshwar Mandir kalpi Jalaun

Share

Pataleshwar temple of Chhoti Kashi Kalpi, where Dronacharya was blessed with a son after worshiping Shivalinga.

Pandavas spent some time in exile here

Pataleshwar Temple is situated on the western part of Kalpi Fort on the southern bank of Yamuna River in Kalpi (Jalaun) city. This Shivling named Pataleshwar has spiritual significance. This Shivalaya is the only fort built near the fort in Gird (Hariganj) Mohalla, in which Shivaji is situated at some low place where it is very cool. This very ancient Shivalaya is the graveyard of the British near this Pataleshwar Temple.

This temple is mythological, this temple is more than 5000 years old. In Dwapar, this idol was famous by the name of Manikeshwar Mahadev. When the fort was built in Kalpi, due to its depth, it started being called Pataleshwar. According to the legend, Dronacharya, the guru of Korvas and Pandavas, had worshiped this Shivalinga to get a son, due to which Lord Shankar was pleased and named him Ashwatthama. Gave a son who attained immortality! This temple was renovated during the Maratha period and there is also a Nag temple at the back where there is an inscription which is not readable. In front is the monastery of Sitaram ji. According to the board in the temple, it was known by the name of Manikeshwar. According to popular belief, this Shivalinga is a self-contained Shivalinga and there is no idea how deep it is. The name Manikeshwar is also found in the Sahastra names of Shiv Purana. From the style of construction of the temple, it seems that the temple must have been renovated during the Maratha period and the Yam temple is older than the Maratha period. Studying the geographical location of this temple shows that This temple is very close to the only remaining Vidhyasav Shesh of the Kalpi Fort of the Chandela period. Its maximum distance from this fort would be 200 meters. The Kalpi fort was very huge and the presence of this temple within its vastness naturally indicates that this temple must have existed during that period also.
