The area was named Pataleshwar after the name of this temple. Here the Shivalinga of Lord Shiva is about 5 feet below the ground.

It is believed that Lord Shiva is being worshiped here in the form of Pataleshwar since time immemorial. There is a religious belief that Lord Shiva, who himself appeared from the underworld about two hundred and fifty years ago, is present in the city. The name of this land, which was the penance place of saints and sages, has since become Pataleshwar Dham. A large number of Shiva devotees visit this Dham in the month of Sawan.
