Pita Maheshwar Mahadev Kashi
There is a Shiva temple in Kashi whose doors do not open in monsoon, know which is such a temple.
Maheshwar Mahadev, father of Lord Shiva, is established in Kashi. His temple is established 30 feet below the ground. This temple is opened for common devotees only once a year on the day of Shivratri. On other days, Jalabhishek is performed from a hole made above the ground Shivalinga.
It is said that Lord Shankar resides in every corner of Kashi and lakhs of people come here in the month of Sawan for Jalabhishek on Baba Vishwanath. There will not be any street or locality of Kashi where Jalabhishek is not performed on the Shivalinga installed in the temples. But there is a temple of Mahadev in Kashi which opens only once a year on the day of Shivratri. This temple remains closed throughout the rest of the year. This is the temple of Maheshwar Mahadev, father of Kashi Vishwanath.
Maheshwar Mahadev is considered as the father of Lord Shiva.
It is believed that this temple has been established here since the time when Ganga and Kashi had no existence. It is believed that when the Gods and Goddesses came to Kashi, they were very disappointed after not seeing their father here. A feeling came in his mind that his parents should also reside at this place. Then the Gods invoked the Supreme Father Maheshwar and on the call of the Gods established Maheshwar Mahadev, the father of Lord Shiva, here.
The doors open only one day a year
Suresh Sharma, the priest of this temple located near Scindia Ghat, told that the Shivalinga installed in this temple is about 30 feet below the ground. There is a big hole above the Shivalinga through which people take darshan. The path to enter this temple is opened only once a year on the day of Shivratri and Rudrabhishek is also performed on that day. This temple remains closed for the safety of the visitors because the road to the temple complex is very old and dilapidated, hence it is opened only once in a year. For the rest of the year, Jalabhishek of Maheshwar Mahadev is performed from the hole above the Shivalinga. Suresh Sharma also tells that Maheshwar Temple and Siddheshwari Mata Temple are the oldest temples of Kashi. Panchmukhi Sheshnag is also installed as an umbrella over Maheshwar Mahadev Shivling. It is also mentioned in Kashi section.
