Long time ago there was a king named Shantanu. One day, King Shantanu, who was religious and knowledgeable about the Vedas, went to the forest with his army for hunting. Saw a woman there. When the king asked her for her introduction, the woman said, “King, don’t ask me for my introduction, I am ready for whatever you want.” For this, she set a condition that whatever she does after becoming queen, the king will never ask her anything about it. The king agreed and married the woman. After marriage, the queen gave birth to a son and immediately drowned him in the river. Because of the promise, the king could not ask questions to the queen. The queen was going to throw her eighth son in the river, when the king stopped the queen and said that she should not throw this son in the river. The queen said that you want a son, I hand over the son to you and because of breaking the promise, I abandon you. I am Ganga, the daughter of Janhu and I married you to fulfill the work of the gods. These are the eight Vasus who came into human form due to the curse of sage Vashishtha. Ganga went ahead from there and started crying because of the sin of killing her son.  Hearing the crying of Ganga, Narada Muni came and asked the reason for the crying. Ganga said, Maharishi, I have killed my sons. How will I get freedom from this sinful act? Narad Muni said, Ganga, you go to Avantika city where your friend Kshipra lives. Worship Mahadev situated to the south of Durdheshwar Mahadev there, due to which all your sins will be destroyed. Ganga came to Avantika city and worshiped Lord Shiva along with her friend Kshipra. Then Surya’s daughter Yamuna and then Saraswati also came there. Meanwhile, Indra asked Muni Narad that Munivar Prayag was not visible, then Narad said that he must have gone to Mahakal forest, where four rivers are meeting. After Prayag, due to the meeting of these four rivers, Shivlinga became famous by the name of Prayageshwar Mahadev. It is believed that whoever worships Lord Prayageshwar, all his sins are destroyed and he attains salvation.
