Pura Gunung Kawi the ancient majestic complex,Bali

Pura Gunung Kawi is one of the oldest and largest temple complexes which also includes funerary complex of King Anak Wungsu. Built in 11th century, the water temple is lined with 10 shrines cut out in the rock face, around 7 meters high from the ground. Pura Gunung Kawi is known as Bali’s “Valley of the Kings”. Each shrine is a memorial of Balinese royalty from 11th century. The temple is located in lush green valley, surrounded by rice fields. The monuments are surrounded by thick vegetation, streams, fountains and ravines. The area gets a mysterious feeling from the green mould encroaching dark rocks everywhere. Be prepared to climb its 270 steps. The green vistas are soothing to the eyes and it is worth the effort. The temple can be visited together with Pura Tirta Empul on a short detour from Tegalalang rice fields.
