Rameshwar Temple Sindkhed Raja,Buldhana,Maharashtra

Share

Introduction

The Rameshvara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in the town of Sindkhed Raja, located within the Sindkhed Raja Taluk of the Buldhana District in Maharashtra, India. This temple is recognized as one of the state-protected monuments in Maharashtra, as declared by the Archaeological Survey of India. Sindkhed Raja holds historical significance as the birthplace of Jijabai, the mother of Maratha Emperor Shivaji.

Puranic Significance

Historically, the original temple is believed to have been constructed during the reign of the Seuna Yadava Dynasty (8th Century) of Devagiri. However, it is said to have been extensively rebuilt by Lakhuji Jadhav, the Maratha chief of Sindkhed Raja, in honor of his mother. The town itself was founded by King Sindurama, and it derived its name from the abundant presence of Sindi Trees in the region. In ancient times, it was also referred to as Siddha Kshetra.

The temple faces eastward and stands atop a raised platform, enclosed within a compound wall. It comprises three main sections: the sanctum, antrala, and sabha mandapa. The sanctum houses the principal deity, Rameshvara, in the form of a Shiva Linga. The sanctum is adorned with a brick-built shikara (tower). Two Nandi statues are positioned in front of the sabha mandapa, both facing the sanctum. Within the temple premises, you can also find several Lingas and damaged images of deities.
