Sampathgiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Perumal Temple

Sampathgiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Perumal Temple is a huge hill in the centre of Polur, Tamil Nadu. This hill has been dedicated to Lord Narasimha and a temple was constructed in ancient times on the hill.The temple is very Important in the Vaishnavate tradition and is a Abhimana Kshethram.

The Temple Steps were built by the Vijayanagara Kings, and the temples were built in Various periods of History. There is cave Annai guaha and there are 2 theerthams Brahma teertham and Pulasthiyar theertham.

There are two vultures that fly around the hill and people believe that they are the two brothers Kolasthiyar and Pulasthiyar. The hill which is opposite to Sampathgiri is called Sapthagiri and it is believed that the 7 sages still reside in this mountain. This temple is completely built by devotees after lord showed up in their dreams.

Legend

Two great Rishis Performed severe penance in this hill towards Lord Narasimha. Lord was pleased and gave 1 mango two both of them. Both the Rishis fought for the mango and Pulasthriya Rishi cut Kolasthriya Rishi’s hands. Even after this incident Kolasthriya Rishi continued his worship for 1 Mandalam (48 Days). After this incident Lord Narasimha appeared Swayambu on the mountain and showered his divine grace towards the Rishi. He also retrieved his hands and told him to install the Utsava murthi at the foot of the hill.

Later, a king from Vijayanagara dynasty expanded the temple. The king built a temple for Venugopala Swamy and his consorts Rukmini and Sathyabhama. They also carved 840 steps on the rocks for the devotees to reach the Lord Lakshmi Narasimha temple.

This place is very powerful and all the prayers are answered in no time. The temple festival is celebrated according to Kamakshi temple of Kanchi.
