There is a temple of Sarangnath Mahadev in Sarnath: It is believed that Mahadev resides here in Saavan; Sarangnath is related to Bholenath.

Sarangnath Temple is located near Sarnath, about seven kilometers away from Cantt Railway Station. According to religious beliefs, this temple is considered to be the in-laws house of Shiva. According to the popular story, Mahadev was married to Sati, daughter of King Daksh. Sati’s elder brother Rishi Sarang was not present at the wedding. When Rishi Sarang returned he came to know about the marriage. When the sage came to know that his sister was married to Aughad living on Kailash, he became angry. He felt that his brother-in-law did not even have proper clothes. After this, when they inquired, they got information that sister Sati and Mahadev were wandering in the extinct city of Kashi. After this, Sage Sarang left with a lot of money to meet his sister. When he reached the place where Sarangnath temple is situated today, he fell asleep due to fatigue. Sarang Rishi dreamed that the city of Kashi was made of gold. After this he realized his mistake and also felt guilty for thinking so many things about his brother-in-law. After this he vowed that now he would stay here and do penance for Baba Vishwanath.

Pleased with the penance of the sage, Mahadev appeared with Sati.
Rishi Sarang had started rigorous penance. While doing penance, gum started coming out from his body like lava but the sage continued his penance. Pleased with the penance of Sarang Rishi, Mahadev appeared before him along with Mother Sati. After this Mahadev asked Sarang Rishi to accompany him.  On this the sage said that this place is very nice so he does not want to go. After this, Mahadev blessed Sarang Rishi and said that in future you will be known as Saranganath. There will be a tradition of offering gum to you in Kalyug. If a skin patient applies gum with true heart, he will get relief from the skin disease.

According to religious beliefs, Kashi Vishwanath, pleased with the devotion of Sage Sarang, is present here in the form of Somnath along with his brother-in-law. In this temple, Sarangnath Mahadev and Baba Vishwanath are worshiped together. There are two Shivalingas at the same place in the temple. It is said that the Shivalinga of Sarangnath is longer and the Gola of Somnath is higher in size. There is a religious belief that by visiting here during Mahashivratri and Sawan, skin diseases are cured. Visiting here after marriage maintains good relations between in-laws and maternal family. If a couple is not having a child then visiting this place brings happiness in having a child.

This temple is said to be Mahadev’s in-laws house and here Mahadev himself along with his brother-in-law gives darshan to his devotees.
