Saubhagyeshwar/Sowbhagyeshwar Mahadev (61/84) Patni Bazar, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

This temple is situated on the first right turn from Shri Dwarkadhish Gopal Temple towards Patni Bazaar. The splendor of its craft and the unique sculptures present in it tell the story of its antiquity. Adorned with old stone pillars and queued figures on the upper door frame, after descending two stairs from its west-facing entrance, the sanctum sanctorum of about 65 square feet has a brown and light red colored linga with a 5 hooded artistic snake figure in the middle of a brass water vessel about 4 feet wide. A two and a quarter feet high trident is buried.

After coming down from the entrance gate, there are ancient statues of 6 inch high dark colored Ganesha from left and of Parvati installed in front. There is no idol of Kartikeya. The circular linga of three feet diameter is visible. Notable are the five idols of Ganesha in a row to the left of the idol of Parvati on the front wall. The ancient black stone statue of Nandi outside is also attractive.

Mahadev told Parvati the story of King Kirtivardhan and his wife Madanmanjari in the first Prakrit Kalpa, who despite being polite, was unfortunate due to the karma earned in her previous birth. As soon as the king saw him, he would burn with fire. The king sent her to the forest, she kept thinking of ways to get her youthful husband. Saw him from a Trikalajna sage mourning, possessed by lust. She asked the reason for separation from her husband, the sage told her that during the eclipse, she was under the influence of evil planets. The sage sent him to Mahakal forest to see an auspicious Linga.

In the past, Indrani had achieved great fortune and destroyed her husband by seeing this. As soon as he had darshan of the Linga, the king asked Maharishi Jamadagni about his beloved wife. Maharishi said, “Your wife is of pure character and devoted to her husband.” The king also reached Mahakal forest and saw him ready to worship Maheshwar. In this way both of them met. That Linga was called Saubhagyeshwar.

The sight of this linga does not cause loss in family, misfortune, poverty and separation from brothers. Lingarchan gives birth to a son, grandson and wife. By seeing it, a person becomes free from all obstacles and attains all the luxuries. To get good luck on Hartalika Teej in Ujjain, there is a long queue to worship in this temple.
