The scientific and religious significance of Kalava is as follows:-
The literal meaning of ‘Mauli’ is ‘above all’. Mauli also means head. Since it is tied on the wrist, it is also called Kalava.
Its Vedic name is Up Manibandh. Lord Shankar has the moon on his head, that is why he is also called Chandramouli. Mouli is made from raw thread.
It basically has threads of 3 colors, red, yellow and green. But sometimes it is also made of 5 threads, which also include blue and white.
3 and 5 sometimes mean the names of Tridev and sometimes Panchdev. By tying Kalava, one gets the blessings of Tridev, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and the three goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati and Saraswati.
Fame is obtained by the grace of Brahma and protection power is obtained by the compassion of Vishnu. Shiva destroys bad qualities. Kalava will cure diseases
According to health, tying Raksha Sutra cures many diseases. These include phlegm, bile etc. The main control of the body structure is in the wrist of the hand.
Therefore, tying a Raksha Sutra here keeps a person healthy. There is also a belief that tying it does not increase the disease. Tying a mauli is said to be beneficial for protection from diseases like blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and paralysis.
Mauli or Raksha Sutra should be made of 100% raw thread, pure. The practice of tying Mauli has been going on since the time when Lord Vaman tied Raksha Sutra on the wrist of the generous King Bali.
Tying it on your wrist protects you from all the troubles in life. It is also mentioned in the Vedas that when Indra was going to fight with Vritrasura, Indrani tied a Rakshasutra on his right arm to protect him. After which Indra became victorious by killing Vritraasura and since then this tradition started.
