Shirali Hale Kote (Old Fort) Hanuman Temple Karnataka

Share

Shirali Hale Kote Hanuman Temple is located in Shirali Village, Mavalli Hobli, Bhatkal Taluk, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka. The temple is situated near the Sharada Hole (stream) and the remnants of an ancient fort, giving it both historical and spiritual significance.

Deity Details

The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, who is the Kuladevata (family deity) of the Namadhari community in 52 seats across 18 clusters of Mavalli Hobli. The deity is also worshipped by devotees from other communities. The temple is famous for the sacred Mudi prasada, and many devotees perform special ceremonies with this prasada. Devotees believe the temple fulfills wishes, provides courage, and grants protection. Devotees who struggled with childlessness have historically received blessings here, especially after performing the Harake ritual under the guidance of Shri Govindaji Madgar.

Architecture

The temple is built beside the remains of the old fort, blending historic ruins with spiritual significance. The Hanuman idol is installed on the banks of Sharada Hole, as per divine instructions. The temple has a simple sanctum, courtyard, and ceremonial hall, with traditional Karnataka-style architecture. The scenic surroundings, including the fort ruins and flowing stream, enhance the temple’s serene environment.

History

The temple has a rich history of about 486 years. It traces back to the era of Salva Krishnadevarasa, the ruler of Gerusoppe Seema. He had entrusted the fort to his disciple Sangeetharaya, who in turn appointed Timma Naik as the fort’s protector. Later, the fort was destroyed by Mahamandaladhishwara Odeyar Sridevaraya, who looted its wealth and left the fort in ruins.

During a visit by the disciples of Shri Ramanujacharya, the idol of Lord Hanuman appeared to them near Sharada Hole. Following divine instructions, the Hanuman idol was installed on the banks of the Sharada stream. Since then, the temple became known as the Shirali Hale Kote Hanuman Temple.

Festivals & Rituals

The temple is known for its Palkhi Utsava (procession), celebrated for over 50 years. The procession starts from Bailur and visits all Namadhari households across 18 clusters over 52 days, beginning in Magha Bahula Pratipada and continuing until Chaitra. On Sri Rama Navami, the Silver Palkhi Utsava is celebrated, along with Navaratri special pujas for ten days. Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada is celebrated for five days. During Karthika month, devotees perform daily pujas and personal rituals, with night-long devotional singing on Karthika Bahula Ekadashi. Devotees also perform rituals during Margashirsha, Pushya, and Magha months.
