Shree Bada Ganpati Mandir Indore

Share

Bada Ganpati, Indore

In Hindi, ‘Bada’ literally means big, and Ganpati is the nickname of Lord Ganesha. This temple earns its name because of the size of the idol of Lord Ganesha – at about 25 feet tall from crown to foot, it is considered to be one of the largest idols of the god in the world. The statue is made of a strange mixture of limestone, jaggery, bricks and sacred soil and water from major pilgrimage places in the country. Located at the end of a quiet lane in Indore city, Bada Ganpati may be a modest looking temple but it holds significance based on the vastness of the idol of the Lord.

There are conflicting accounts about how the Holy Abode came into existence. Established by Shri Dadhich in the year 1875, the Bada Ganapati Temple was constructed by the members of the family, the then rulers of the Holkar dynasty. Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar took over this project more than 100 years ago. Ganapati is said to bring happiness and prosperity. The Lord is worshiped at the beginning of any new event, venture or worship throughout the country. Devotees from all over the world come to Indore to see this statue of immense religious importance.Devotees of Ganapati must include this temple in their itinerary. It is especially ideal during the festive season when there is continuous celebration through worship and sweet offerings to Lord Ganesha in the hope of seeking blessings for peace, prosperity and well-being.
