Devadhidev 23×19″ white colored divine statue of the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanath Prabhu is well known by the name of Shri Mahadeva Parshvanath. Mahadeva Parshvanath, with his cool and gentle form and who gives the nectar of life to his devotees with his image of unique beauty, is seated in Padmasana posture.
There is no concrete evidence to prove the age of the idol, nor why it is known as Mahadeva Parshvanath. However, it is believed that the Supreme God is the same as Mahadeva.
The city of Patan was founded in 802 AD and was the capital of the Chavda kings who ruled Patan. They were Jains and built many temples in Patan that are still famous today. Then came the Chalukya dynasty, which produced many great kings such as Siddharaja and Maharaja Kumarapala. Jainism flourished during this period. However, the city was destroyed in 1356 AD by a Muslim invasion led by Malik Ghafur, a general of Alauddin. Most of the temples built by many great kings and their ministers were destroyed during this invasion.
The Mahadev Parshvanath Temple is located in the Mahadev Ki Sheri neighborhood of Khetarvasi in Patan. The idol of Mahadev Parshvanath is ancient, captivating, and beautiful. The temple’s antiquity is unknown. A glorious and cultural pride, Patan has been flying the flag of Dharma since 802 AD. For this reason, there is no doubt about the antiquity of Mahadeva Parshvanath Temple.
In this magnificent, three-sanctored temple, Parshvanath, resplendent like the full moon, is enshrined as the primary deity. In the sanctum sanctorum, Sri Neminatha is seated on one side, and Adinath Dada on the other. The temple houses approximately 29 metal and five stone statues. The floor and walls of the temple are beautifully painted and decorated.
Mahadeva Parshvanath is mentioned in “Patna Chaitya Paripati”, 365 Sri Parsva Jina Nammala, “108 Names Garbhit Sri Parsvanath Stavan”, “Sri Parsvanath Nammala”, “Patna Jinalaya Stuti” etc. Reference to this temple is found in the Patan Chaitya Paripati composed by Ladhashah in VS 1777. In this Paripati, Sheri is mentioned as Surji Madhavani Pol. In the Jain Tirtha Sarvasangrah, this temple is described as the Parshva Jinalaya in Mahadevni Sheri. The first mention of this temple is found in a hymn composed by Shri Pandit Hiralal. There is an idol of Mahadev Parshvanath in the Kalikund Parshvanath Temple in Santacruz, Mumbai.
There is also information that King Kumar Pal used to take benefit of worship and aarti in this glorious temple. There are many Dharamshala and excellent arrangements of dining halls for the convenience of the travelers in Dharmakshetra Patan.
This is one of the most ancient temples and very ancient idols of the Jain people.
History has it that King kumarpaal would come here to do puja and Arti , and would weave a new pair of clothes to wear and visit the temple every day. Such is the greatness of this temple. The one who visits, would be blessed with abundance by HIM.
