Shri Charup Parshvnath Shwetamber Jain Tirth, Charup,Patan,Gujarat

Share

Nearly 120 cms. high, black-coloured idol of Bhagwan Shyamala Parshvanath in the Padmasana posture. There is an umbrella of 7 hoods over the head of the idol. This is one of the oldest idol of any Thirthankara.
It is in the centre of the Charup village.

This idol has a very ancient history. 2,222 years after the period of 16th Thirthankara Shri Naminath Bhagwan of the past chouvisi, Ashadi Shravak of Gaud Desh got made three beautiful idols of Thirthankaras and installed them. Lakhs of years went by. One day, when a businessman Dhan of Kantipur was going by sea, his ships stopped moving and became still. Any effort to make them move was futile and he did not know what to do. A divine voice asked him to take the miraculous idols from the depths of the ocean and install them and also told him the history of the idol. The idol of Bhagwan Parshvanath was installed in this temple of Charup under the auspices of Shri Devendrasurisvarji of the Nagendra Gachchha in the ninth century. The idol of Arishtanemi was installed in Patan and the third idol of Sthamban Parshvanath was installed in a temple on the banks of the Sedhi river. This temple fell into disorder after Vikram 18th century and came into the hands of the Non-Jains. In V.S. 1938, the Jain community of Patan took the management of the temple into their hands and renovated the temple. It was renovated again in V.S.1984. There is a reference that a temple of Shri Adinath Bhagwan was built here by Shresthi Sri Devchandra, a resident of Nagore in 13th Vikram century. There is another reference of Shresthi Shri Pethadshah building a temple of Shri Shanthinath Bhagwan here in the Vikram year 1320. Both these temples are not there now.

This temple is beautified with huge elephants adorning the entrance of the temple. The idol in it is a matchless model of ancient art. The idol is a specimen of unequalled and unsurpassable ancient sculptural art. It depicts exquisitely the peace and equipoise, serenity and radiance, physical weakness but spiritual strength of a person in austerities and deep meditation.

It’s one of 108 Parasnath tirth and must visit place for all Jains. New dharamshala is built here with all the required modern amenities.

One of 108 Parasnath tirth and must visit for all Jains. Once upon a time, Patan was believed to be a cradle of Jainism and a very poiuse place.

The history of this idol is believed to be very ancient. It is said that in remote past, Sri Ashadhi Shravak, a Jain householder had got three idols ceremonially installed, this idol is one of them. There is a reference available of the installation of the “Parikar” of Sri Parshvanath Prabhu in the holy shrine of Charup at the hands of Sri Devchandrasuriji of Nagendra Gachchha in 9th Vikram century. There is a reference available of another temple that of Sri Adinath Bhagwan having been built by Shreshthi Sri Devchandra a resident of Nagor in 13th Vikram century. One more reference states that Shreshthi Sri Pethadshah built here a temple of Sri Shanthinath Bhagwan in Vikram year 1320. In the composition entitled “Vividh Tirth Kalp” in Vikram year 1389 by Sri Jinprabhsuriji, this shrine has been referred to. In “Chaitya Paripati” composed by Tilaksurihi in Vikram 14th Century, this shrine has been also referred to . In the very same century, Sri Jaishekharsiriji has also reefed to this shrine. In Vikram 15th century Sri Kirtimerusurihi has referred to this shrine in “Shashvat Tirthmala”. In Vikram 17th century Sri Shantikushalsuriji has referred to it in “Godi Parshva Stavan”. In Vikram 18th century, Sri Meghvijayji Upadhyay in his “Prashvatha Namamala” and Sri Shilvijayji in his “Tirthmala” have referred to it. After Vikram 18th century, for some years this shrine remained disturbed and under the management of Non-Jains. In Vikram year 1938 Jain householders of Patan once again undertook the management of this temple got the same ceremonially re-consecrated on Jyest Sukla 5 in Vikram year 1984.

The idol of Charup Parshwanath Bhagwan is said to have been created 2,222 years after the time of Bhagwan Naminath, the 16th Tirthankara of the past Chovisi. It was originally commissioned by Ashadi Shravak of Gaud Desh, who created three sacred idols:
One idol (now at Charup) was retrieved from the ocean by merchant Dhan of Kantipur after receiving a divine vision
Second idol was installed in Patan (Arishtanemi)
Third idol was placed on the banks of the Sedhi River (Stambhan Parshwanath)
The idol at Charup was installed under the auspices of Acharya Shri Devendrasurisvarji of Nagendra Gachchha in the 9th century.
The temple fell into disrepair by the 18th Vikram century and came into the hands of non-Jains. In V.S. 1938, the Jain Sangh of Patan reclaimed and renovated the temple. It was again renovated in V.S. 1984.
