It is believed that seeing Shri Nagchandreshwar brings health as well as fame. The temple of Shri Nagchandeshwar Mahadev, one of the eighty-four Mahadevs located in Ujjaini, is located in Patni Bazaar.
According to mythology, once Devarshi Narad Muni was narrating the story in the Sudharma meeting of King Indra. Then Devraj Indra said to her, O Devarshi, you have seen all the three worlds, you have to go. Please tell me that this is possible on this earth
Which is the best place, which is liberating? In response, Naradji said, O King of Dev, the best place on earth is Prayag. But ten times more sacred and beautiful than that is Avantika in Mahakaal forest. happiness just by seeing there
And salvation is attained. Hearing the words of Narada Muni, all the gods including Lord Indra boarded planes and reached Avantika situated in the Mahakal forest.
After reaching there, the gods saw that in the Mahakal forest, there are crores of Shivlingas present everywhere, not even an inch of space is vacant. Shiva is Nirmalya everywhere and fearing the sin of crossing Shiva Nirmalya, all the gods started returning to heaven. Then he saw that a divine man appeared happily moving towards heaven. Then the gods asked him, where are you going with great joy? What’s the best thing you’ve done? In reply the divine man replied, I am a devotee of Mahakal. My name is Nagchandeshwar. I have been blessed to be his member. The gods asked – Didn’t you feel guilty for crossing Shiva Nirmalya there? Then he told that there is a linga in the north-east corner of Ishaneshwar. By seeing that Linga, not only the sins of crossing Shiva-Nirmalya but also all the sins are erased.
Hearing the words of Nagchandreshwar, all the gods came to see the divine linga situated near Ishaneshwar. After reaching there and having darshan, all the sins of the gods were destroyed along with Shiva Nirmalya. The divine man Nagchandreshwar gave direction to the gods, hence the gods named that Mahadev Nagchandreshwar.
