Shri Pancha Durgaparameshwari Temple is a sacred Hindu temple located in Poonja village, Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga Parameshwari, the powerful mother goddess who protects devotees from evil forces. This temple is over 800 years old and holds great religious and cultural significance in the region.

Shri Pancha Durgaparameshwari Temple” suggests the presence of five forms of Goddess Durga, each representing different aspects of divine energy. In many traditions, the five forms of Durga (Pancha Durga) believed to be are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda and Skandamata.

Architecture

The temple follows traditional South Indian temple architecture. The main sanctum (Garbhagriha) houses the deity, beautifully decorated with flowers and ornaments. The gopuram (entrance tower) is adorned with intricate carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, depicting various mythological stories. The temple has a large courtyard, pillared halls, and a sacred pond nearby for ritual cleansing before prayers.

Inside the temple, the murti (idol) of Goddess Durga Parameshwari is made of stone and metal, symbolizing her divine power. The temple complex also has smaller shrines dedicated to other deities.

History & Legend

According to local legends (Sthalapurana), this temple was established by sages and divine beings who worshipped Goddess Durga to seek her blessings for protection and prosperity. The name “Pancha Durgaparameshwari” suggests the presence of five forms of Durga Mata, each representing different aspects of divine energy. It is believed that the goddess appeared in this sacred place to bless and guide her devotees.

Many devotees also believe that the temple was once surrounded by dense forests, where saints and rishis performed yagnas and penance. Over time, the temple became a center for spiritual worship, attracting people from different regions.

The temple is known for its grand celebrations during
Navaratri – Nine nights of devotion, poojas, and cultural performances.

Annual Jathra Mahotsava – A temple fair that attracts thousands of devotees.

Special Durga Poojas, Homas (fire rituals), and Abhisheka performed regularly.

Shri Pancha Durgaparameshwari Devi is the embodiment of divine feminine power, guiding devotees toward strength, wisdom, and protection. She is the Mother Goddess who nurtures, protects, and blesses all who surrender to her with faith and devotion.
