Shri Sphurling Parshvanath
Bijapur Tehsil of Mehsana district is an ancient city. According to the inscription, Ahaddev had settled it in the year 1256 in memory of his father. The settlement of this city is mentioned in the texts written in 1571. A golden idol was installed in a Jain temple here. Many ancient writings mention Bijapur as belonging to the 8th and 9th century. In 1280, Vastupal Tejpal had the Chintamani Parshvanath Jain temple renovated. This is mentioned on an ancient Pattavali. In 1295, Ajitprabha Ganivarya created a book named ‘Dharmaratna Shravakacharya’ and Vidyanand Suriji composed ‘Vidyanand Vyakaran’ while installing the idol of mother Saraswati. From all this it is clear that Bijapur is an ancient city.
This new temple of Sphurling Parshvanath has been built here. It is said that the shrine of Sphurling Parshvanath was earlier in Nepal. According to the information, when there was a terrible riot in the city of Pataliputra and fear spread among the people, Bhadrabahu Swami came to Patan and composed ‘Uvasaggaharam Stotra’. The word Sphurling has been used in this Stotra. It means a disturbance like a particle of fire. Due to the quality of removing disturbances, the name ‘Sphurling Parshvanath’ became famous. This shrine was constructed after Acharya Subodh Sagarsuri received a divine signal to build it. The consecration was done on Vaishakh Vadi Teej in the year 2037.
The idol of Sphurlinga Parshvanath Prabhu with a very gentle form and a sweet smile, adorned with nine hoods is unique and beautiful.
There is a large population of Jains in Bijapur. The city has 12 Jain temples, Gyan Bhandar, school, Dharamshala and Bhojanshala etc. along with Upashraya.
Sphurling Parshvanath temple has been built in a grand manner. Good arrangements of Dharamshala and Bhojanshala have been made in the large complex. It is maintained by Shri Sphurling Parshvanath Jain temple trust.
