Shri Uddhav Temple – Govardhan

Shri Uddhav temple is located at Govardhan near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.Shri Uddhavaji was a very close associate of Lord Krishna.

Uddhav who was a scholar and intellectual firmly believed that Lord Krishna and Balarama were manifestations of Lord Vishnu and he came to this conclusion on the basis of the childhood miracles of Krishna and his elder brother.

Uddhav witnessed all the actions of Krishna on earth and he also had the misfortune of being the messenger to inform Yadavas about the death of Sri Krishna and about the impending doom of the Yadava clan and the submerging of Dwarka under sea.

Lord Krishna decided that Uddhav should remain in this world as his representative to instruct people about the Lord’s nature and esoteric truths. He then imparts the Supreme Knowledge called ‘Bhagavata’ which he had taught Brahma in Padmakalpa.

Temple History
Uddhav Temple has been said that after the departure of Shri Krishna Uddhav Ji was restless and came to this place. Here Uddhav Ji being absorbed in Krishna’s love, used to sing and chant the glories of Radha Krishna.
After the departure of Sri Krishna from this world, his queens went with their grandson Vajranaba feeling intense separation from their beloved Lord and they took shelter of Kalindi, who advised them to go to Kusum Sarovar.
to meet Uddhav ji. Parikshit Maharaj brought them here to Kusum Sarovara and met Uddhav ji and began to sing kirtans and bhajans of Sri Radha Krishna.

Pleased by their devotion, Sri Uddhava gave them his darshan. First, he spoke about the importance of hearing or reciting Shrimad-Bhagavatam, saying that at the present time Sri Krishna and his lilas are unmanifested, but by the influence of Srimad-Bhagavatam or chanting Sri Krishna’s names, he will appear in one’s heart along with his Lila.

He sent Maharaj Parikshit to complete his duties.He told him not to worry that later on he would meet Sukadeva who would recite the Srimad Bhagavatam for him.

Uddhav ji began his narration of the srimad-bhagavatam which went for one month. After a few days of relishing the topics of Krishna’s lila by Shri Uddhava’s the queens, first were able to perceive those and then enter those lilas, becoming part of Sri Krishna’s entourage. Being cured of the disease of separation from their beloved, they entered their supreme destination. After this event, Sri Vajranabha installed three murtis of Uddhav ji here.
