The 16th Monday Story

Once upon a time, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were walking on the world of death. While roaming around he came to a city named Amravati in Vidarbha country. There was a beautiful Shiva temple in that city, so Mahadevji started living there with Parvatiji. One day, while talking, Parvati asked Shiva to play chausar. Lord Shiva agreed and started playing Chaucer.

At the same time, the priest of the temple came for the daily aarti, Parvati asked the priest, “Tell me who will win in Chausar among the two of us.” When the game of Chausar was over, Parvati won and Shiva lost. When Parvati got angry and wanted to curse the priest, Shiva stopped her and said that this is a game of luck and there is no fault of her, yet Mother Parvati cursed her for being a leper and she became a leper. He had been ill for a long time. One day an apsara came to that temple to worship Shiva and saw the leprosy of that priest. When the apsara asked the priest the cause of the leprosy, he narrated the whole incident to her. The apsara said to the priest, “You should fast sixteen Mondays to get rid of this leprosy.” Apsara said, “Washing clean clothes after taking a bath on Monday and making a panjiri with half a kilo of flour, dividing that panjiri into three parts, worshipping Lord Shiva during Pradosh Kaal, giving one-third of this panjiri as prasad to the people who come to the aarti, thus adopting the same method till the sixteenth Monday, making a churma with one-fourth wheat flour on the 17th Monday and offering it to Shiva and distributing it among the people, this will remove your leprosy. In this way, by fasting on sixteen Mondays, his leprosy was removed and he started living happily.

One day, Shiva and Parvati again returned to the temple and saw the priest in perfect health. Parvati asked the priest the secret of health. The priest said he fasted on 16 Mondays, which cured his leprosy. Parvati ji was very happy to hear about this fast. He also observed this fast and this made his son return home and become obedient. Kartikeya asked his mother the reason for his mental change so that he returned home. Parvati told him about the sixteen Monday fast behind all this. Kartikeya was very happy to hear this.

Kartikeya made that vow to meet his Brahmin friend who had gone abroad, and on the sixteenth Monday his friend returned from abroad to meet him. When his friend asked the reason for this rule, Kartikeya told the glory of Solah Somwar Vrat, on hearing this, that Brahmin friend also thought of observing Solah Somwar Vrat for marriage. One day the king was preparing for the marriage of his daughter. Many princes came to marry the king’s daughter. The king put a condition that whoever the elephant puts a garland around his neck, his daughter will be married to him. That Brahmin was also the same and as luck would have it, that elephant put a varmala around that Brahmin’s neck and as per the condition, the king got his daughter married to that Brahmin.

One day the princess asked the brahmin what good you had done that the elephant had left all the other princes and put a garland around your neck. She said, “Dear, I had fasted sixteen Mondays at the behest of my friend Kartikeya, as a result of which you got me a bride like Lakshmi.” The princess was very impressed to hear this and she also fasted sixteen Mondays to get a son.

Hearing this, he also kept this fast for the desire of kingship. At the same time a king was looking for a bridegroom to marry his daughter, and the people said that the boy was suitable for marriage. When the king came to know of this, he married his daughter to the boy. When the king died a few years later, he became king because he had no son. Even after getting the kingship, he continued to fast on Mondays. One day on the 17th Monday fast, his wife was also asked to come to the Shiva temple for worship, but she sent the maid instead of coming herself. After the worship of the Brahmin son was over, Akashwani happened, “You keep your wife away from your palace, otherwise you will be destroyed.” The Brahmin son was surprised to hear this.

When he returned to the palace, he also told his courtiers about this, so the courtiers said that the one who got the throne for him would take him out of the palace. But that Brahmin son threw him out of the palace. The princess came hungry and thirsty to an unknown city. An old woman was going to the market to sell yarn. As soon as he saw the princess, he asked her to help him in business with her. The princess also placed a basket on her head. After walking some distance, a storm came and the basket flew away. Now the old woman began to cry and asked the princess to leave, thinking it was ridiculous.

After that, he reached an oil house and as soon as he reached there, all the oil pots broke and the oil started flowing. That oil also thought him to be insane and drove him away from there. After that she reached near a beautiful pond and as soon as she started drinking water, insects started moving in that water and all the water became hazy. Cursing her misfortune, she drank the dirty water and fell asleep under the tree as soon as all the leaves of that tree fell. Now the leaves of the tree she went to would fall.

Seeing this, the people there went to the priest of the temple. The priest, understanding the pain of the princess, said to her, “Daughter, you stay with my family, I will keep you as my daughter, you will not have any problem in my ashram. “That’s how she started living in the ashram. Seeing this, the priest was surprised and said to her, “What kind of anger is this on you, daughter, that you are in such a condition,” she told the same story of not going to Shiva Puja. The priest worshipped Shiva and asked him to fast on the sixteenth Monday, which would surely give him relief.

He fasted on sixteen Mondays and on the 17th, the Brahmin son began to think about him, “Where will she be, I should look for her. “So he sent his men to look for his wife, and they came to the priest’s house and found the princess. He asked the priest to take the princess home, but the priest refused, saying, “Tell your king to come and take it himself.” The king himself came there and brought the princess back to his palace. In this way, whoever fasts on this sixteenth Monday, all his wishes are fulfilled.
