Shivalinga of Somnath found out from excavation.

The mythological importance of Kanpur is also no less. In the month of Sawan, the whole country is engrossed in the devotion of Bhole, so the views in this city too are no less than Kashi. There are many temples of Lord Bholenath in the city. Most of these temples are such that devotees come from far and wide for darshan. Like Somnath temple of Gujarat, there is Somnath temple behind Kalyanpur police station also. This temple was destroyed by some invaders. This temple was demolished not once or twice, but thrice. The broken statues in the temple are a witness to this even today.

Shivlinga was found during excavation

Five Shivalingas were found here during the excavation done by the shepherds. Four small Shivalingas are installed at the four corners of the temple, while Lord Somnath sits in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and gives darshan to the devotees. Lord Neelkanth and Amarnath are also seen in the temple. There is a historical pond behind this temple which is about 800 years old. Whatever milk, curd, ghee, honey etc. is offered in the Jalabhishek and Abhishek of Lord Somnath, is found in the water of the pond. Devotees believe that bathing in the pond cures many incurable diseases including leprosy. However, now due to lack of cleanliness in the pond, bathing etc. is stopped.

Devotees used to offer food

In old times, farmers from more than 50 nearby villages used to come and first offer the food grains from their fields to Baba. Farmers believed that offering food in this temple protects their crops from natural calamities and also brings prosperity. With the passage of Samat, farmers stopped coming but still some farmers come to the temple and offer food.

Darshan on 21 Monday leads to the birth of a child.

There is a crowd of devotees in the temple at this time in the morning and evening. People who visit here believe that by visiting here on 21 Mondays, a childless couple gets a child. After the wishes were fulfilled, the devotees got Baba’s Shivalinga plated with silver. Apart from this, many devotees have also got different works done.
