Sri Janardhana Swami Temple in Yermal, Udupi District, Karnataka, is a revered Hindu shrine with a history spanning over a millennium. The temple is dedicated to Lord Janardhana, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu.
The name “Janardhana” represents Lord Vishnu as the protector and uplifter of humanity.
Lord Vishnu is referred to as Janardhana, a name that holds deep spiritual and philosophical significance. The term “Janardhana” is derived from Sanskrit:
“Jana” means “people” or “living beings.”
“Ardhan” means “to uplift, protect, or liberate” and also “to chastise or destroy evil.”
The temple is unique as it houses two idols of Janardhana, referred to as Adhi Janardhana (the originally deity) and Gopi Chandana Murthy Janardhana (installed by Madhvacharya).
The temple reflects traditional South Indian architecture, with a sanctum sanctorum (garbha gudi) and a sacred pond (theertha mantapa).

Historical Significance
The temple’s origins are deeply rooted in local legends and the spiritual endeavors of prominent saints. Initially, the main deity was Sri Adhi Janardhana Swamy. Approximately 800 years ago, the revered philosopher and saint, Sri Madhvacharya, installed the present idol of Sri Janardhana Swamy, who is also referred to as “Gopi Chandana Murthy.”
The temple’s history is closely associated with the Udupa family, who have been its hereditary trustees for over 700 years. They have played a key role in maintaining the temple’s traditions and rituals.
The temple is built near a sacred water body, believed to have divine properties. Devotees take a dip in the pond to purify themselves before offering prayers.
The annual car festival (Rathotsava) is a grand event celebrated in December, attracting devotees from far and wide.Rituals and pujas are performed daily to honor Lord Janardhana.
