Story of Shiva’s form as heaven, Lord Mahadev in Ujjain
When Sati died in Daksh Yagya, chaos spread all around. Shiva freed his Ganas, who created terror in the universe. The Ganas took over the heaven and the gods were left with no place to live.
Then the gods approached Brahma and advised him to go to Mahakal forest and worship Lord Shiva.
Here he worshiped Shivalinga. Shiva appeared before the gods and agreed to recall the Ganas from heaven.
Thus the gods got their home back.
Since the gods attained heaven after worshiping here, the Shivalinga came to be known as Swargadwaraeshwar Mahadev.
