Swayambhoo Sree Durga Parameshwari Temple Kerala
Vilayanchatanur village which is located about 10 kilometers south of Palakkad city on the Palakkad-Nenammara road. At the center of this village is an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga Parameshwari, whose auspicious presence pervades the entire place. The temple is believed to have seen days of grandeur and glory in its more than four hundred years of history, before it fell into neglect and disuse.
According to legends the idol of the goddess was self-existent. The story related to the mysterious discovery of the idol and the subsequent construction of the temple is as follows. This place was once a vast and dense grassland, where one day a woman was cutting trees with a sharp sickle, when suddenly her sickle collided with something hard and a rattling sound came from it. Looking at her sickle she was horrified to see obvious traces of blood on it. Frightened, she ran to tell the village elders, who contacted astrologers for their predictions. He said that this place is fortunate to be blessed with the divine presence of Goddess Durga. When the place was cleared of brush, a large-sized Swayambhu stone idol was found and in time a temple was built for the goddess.
