To the west of today’s Manchar, Tapovan is a place known as a holy Tapobhumi. This locality is known as Tapaneshwar ● since ancient times as Lord Shiva Shankar performed penance in this Tapovana. There is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shankara as his abode here. It is still famous as Tapaneshwar temple. The Pandavas set foot on this land and performed austerities at this picturesque Pawan Tirtha: such mythological references are available. By visiting this shrine, Lord Krishna was tempted to see the holy abode of sages and Lord Shiva Shankar. And soon the yoga of this Bhoomidarshan happened in his life.

Once Lord Krishna asked the Pandavas to go to Hastinapur (Old Delhi) and perform the Ashwamegha Yagna. A horse (horse) was released on the earth to orbit the earth. Arjuna, the greatest archer of all, was the protector of this horse. This horse running at the speed of the air was hand ridden in Manipur by Veer Babruvahana, tied down and proved his prowess and strength. He introduced Arjuna in a polite tone that I am his own son. But Arjuna’s ego woke up. And in the tone of Darpokti he needed, O Nepuska! How will you be my son? This is not possible. You are a dancer’s son. Veer Babruvahana got angry and they fought fiercely, Arjuna was not successful in freeing Ashwa. In this tumultuous battle, that horse fell down and Arjuna’s head was thrown in the air by the Babruvahana. The news of Arjuna’s slaying reached the ears of Shri Krishna like Vanya. Lord Krishna rushed to the city of Manipur. Arjuna’s entire family moved to Manipur. Lord Krishna joined Arjuna’s body with tapobala and gave him life. He blessed Veer Babruvahana. Took darshan of Lord Sritapaneshwar. Satisfied the sages of Tapovana by giving darshan. All the sages joined their hands and fell on their feet and prayed for the mercy of Shri Krishna and prayed to stay forever in this land. Shri Krishna happily said Tahastu and continued to live under the pipal tree in the courtyard of Shri Tapaneshwar Mahadeva. Sri Krishna i.e. Kanhoba temple is a place of worship for many devotees.

The vast Dudumbi ponds in front of the temple of Sri Tapaneshwar Mahadeva, replete with solid stone structures, tells the story of Manipur during the Ramayana period. Vali and Sugriva had a great war with Dudumbi, a terrible demon. Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva. Similarly, Dudumbi was a devoted devotee of Sri Lord Krishna. At the last moment, Dudumbhini prayed to Shri Krishna. Lord Krishna appeared. Dudumbi was given darshan. He named the pool formed on the ground worn out during this war as Dudumbitale and gave a boon to Dudumbi that whoever bathes in this pool will get rid of all his sins. Dudumbi kept his body here and went to heaven.
