Once in Tretayuga there was a famine due to lack of rain. Then Kaushik Muni left his home and went to another place with his wife and sons to take care of the family.

Even after that, due to difficulty in supporting the family, he left one of his sons midway. That child started crying due to hunger and thirst. Then at some distance he saw a Peepal tree and a pond of water.

He satisfied his hunger and thirst by eating peepal leaves and drinking water from the pond. That boy started passing his time by eating leaves and doing penance. One day Devarshi Narad reached there. The child bowed to him.

Narada Muni was happy to see the child’s humility in adverse circumstances. He performed the rituals of the child and taught him the Vedas and also initiated him with the mantra of ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay’.

Lord Vishnu was pleased with the penance of the child. Lord Vishnu appeared and asked the child to ask for a boon. The child asked for the boon of devotion to God. Then Lord Vishnu taught the child yoga and knowledge, due to which he became a highly knowledgeable Maharishi.

One day curiosity arose in the mind of the child. He asked Narad Muni,

Why was I separated from my parents at such a young age?

Why do I have to suffer so much pain..?

Narada Muni said to the child – ‘You have performed severe penance by eating Peepal leaves, hence from today I am naming you Pippalad.

As far as your sufferings are concerned, the reason for them is the planet Saturn, due to whose slow movement the entire world along with you is suffering from famine.

Hearing this the child became very angry. As soon as he got excited and saw Saturn moving in the sky, Saturn fell on a mountain on the ground due to the brilliance of the boy Pippalad, due to which he became crippled.

Then Brahmadev and other gods came there and pacified the anger of the child Pippalad and said that whoever meditates on the name of Pippalad on Saturday and worships it with full devotion, he will get relief from the troubles of planet Saturn and will also get the happiness of having a child. .

At the same time, Brahmadev told Pippalad Muni to restore the fallen Shani in his place, because he is innocent.

That is why for the peace of Saturn, there is a tradition of worshiping Shani Dev along with the Peepal tree on Saturday.
