Adhyatmic Stories

The demon Andhak was the son of Shiva Parvati, this was how he was born.

Share

Once Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati reached Kashi while roaming. Lord Shiva was sitting there with his face towards the east. At the same time Parvati came from behind and closed the eyes of Lord Shiva with her hands. By doing this the whole world was covered in darkness for that moment. To save the world, Shiva opened his third eye, thereby restoring light to the world. But Parvati started sweating due to its heat.

A child appeared from those drops of sweat. That child’s mouth was very big and scary. Seeing that child, Mother Parvati asked Lord Shiva about his origin. Lord Shiva called him his son because he was born from sweat. Because it was born in darkness, it was named Andhak. After some time, when the demon Hiranyaksha asked for the boon of having a son, Lord Shiva granted Andhak to him in the form of a son. Andhak grew up among the demons and later became the king of the demons.

Andhak had done penance and sought a boon from Lord Brahma that he would die only if he looked at his mother with sexual desire. Andhak thought that this would never happen because he had no mother. After getting the boon, Andhak defeated the gods and became the king of the three worlds.

Then he felt that now he has everything so he should get married. He decided that he would marry the most beautiful woman of the three worlds. When he inquired, he came to know that in all the three worlds there was no one more beautiful than Parvati, the princess of the mountains. Who has given up his father’s glory and married Shiva. He immediately went to Parvati and proposed marriage to her. When Parvati refused, he started taking her forcefully and Parvati invoked Shiva.

On the call of Parvati, Shiva appeared there and told Andhak that he was the son of Parvati. Saying this he killed Andhak.

Special: In Vaman Purana, Andhak has been described as the son of Shiva-Parvati, who is killed by Shiva, while according to another theory, Andhak was the son of Kashyap Rishi and Diti. Who was killed by Lord Shiva.
