The Hindu Monastery of Africa was established in 1975 under the auspices of His Holiness Swami Krishnanand Saraswati.
Creditably the first indigenous Ghanaian Hindu temple dedicated to the teachings of Sanatana Dharama, witnessed in March 1975, the initiation of the first black African monk, His Holiness Swami Ghananand Saraswati into the divine order of Sanyasi.
Until 2016, when Swami Ghananand attained divine transition (Samadhi), the Hindu Monastery of Africa under divine leadership of the same, has expanded and built five more branches in three regions of Ghana and one branch in Togo.
After the attainment of Samadhi, His Holiness Swami Satyanand assumed the leadership of the Hindu Monastery of Africa and became its second monk.
Initiated into the divine Order of Sanyasi by his Master and Guru, Swami Ghananand in 2012, Swami Satyanand has built a shrine in the honour of swami Ghananand where daily devotion is offered.
The Hindu Monastery of Africa has a membership of about 2000 Ghanaian families worshiping at the various branches in Ghana and Togo.
Since its establishment, the monastery inspired by the principle of service, undertakes monthly social service to the underprivileged and the poor. Charity support is given to persons with physical and mental disabilities, children orphanages, leprosarium as well as yearly donation to the biggest teaching hospital in Ghana – Korle bu Teaching Hospital.
Our Philosophy

The Hindu Monastery of Africa is founded on the Vedic philosophy of non – dualism. With its motto; Love, serve, meditate and realized, devotees and disciples are taught to perceive the supreme Consciousness in all of its manifestations.

The Hindu Monastery of Africa observes most of the major auspicious days and festivals in the Hindu mythology such as Ayyappa, Maha Shivaratri, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Gayatri Jayanti etc.

The practice of non-violence or “Ahimsa” is strictly adhered to and members are encouraged to become vegetarians

Rooted in the tradition of disciplic succession, the monastery observes annually as auspicious specific days attributed to the holy monks of the monastery such as Swami Krishnanad festival and Swami Ghananand initiation and divine transition or attainment of “Maha Samadhi”.

As part of its philosophy of oneness, the Hindu Monastery of Africa’s community co – exists in harmony with all the other religious organization and practices in Ghana.
