The secret of daily worship of Lord Indra in Kedarnath
Horrible natural disaster all around, mountains and buildings flowing like cards from three sides in the tsunami of Alaknanda; But Kedareshwar stood firm in the middle, not even a single stone of his residence could be shaken by this flood.
Gods, demons and humans all worship Lord Shiva. Hence the entire Triloki is pervaded by Shiva. Although there are innumerable Shivalingas on earth, the main ones among them are twelve Jyotirlingas. One of them is ‘Kedarnath’ or ‘Kedareshwar’ situated on a peak called Kedar in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas.
Kedar region is eternal
Lord Shiva is present on earth in the form of Kedarnath in the Kedar region of the Himalayas from age to age with the wish for the welfare of the entire world. Here the daily presence of Lord Shiva is considered. Nar-Narayan, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, performed penance in Badarika Ashram. They used to worship the earthly Shivling daily and Lord Shiva used to come to that linga daily. One day Lord Shiva appeared and asked him to ask for a boon. Nar-Narayan said – ‘Lord! If you are happy then you should become established here with your form and keep removing the sorrows of the devotees. Since then Lord Shankar became established there in the form of Jyotirlinga.
In Satyayuga, Upmanyuji worshiped Lord Shankar here. In Dwapar, Pandavas did penance here and got relief from their sorrows. When the Padavas prayed, Lord Shiva turned his face downwards and settled there. There is no idol in Kedarnath. There is a very large triangular mountain block (rock) with five faces.
The secret of the name ‘Kedar’
According to Skandapuran, in ancient times, in Swayambhuva Manvantar, there was a mighty and very powerful demon named Hiranyaksha. With the power of his penance, he expelled Indra from heaven and gained control over Triloki. Indra along with the gods came to Gangadwar (Gangotri) and started performing penance.
One day, pleased with Indra’s penance, Lord Shiva took the form of Mahisha (buffalo) and came to Indra and said – ‘K Daryami?’
That is, ‘Which of all the demons should I disintegrate in water in this form (Mahish form)?’
Indra said, ‘Lord! You kill these five demons – Hiranyaksha, Subahu, Vaktakandhar, Trishringa and Lohitaksha, because after their death, other demons will automatically become as if they were dead.’
Then Lord Shiva went to the place where demons like Hiranyaksh were. Seeing that terrible buffalo, all the demons started beating it with stones and sticks. Lord Shiva in the form of Mahisha killed all five demons including Hiranyaksha in one go with the blow of his horns. After this, Lord Shiva came to Indra and said – ‘I have killed all the five demons, now you rule over Triloki again and if you want to ask for any other boon from me, then ask for it.’
Indra said ‘Lord! You reside here in this form for the protection, welfare and establishment of religion in Triloki.
Darshan of Lord Kedareshwar and drinking the water there does not lead to rebirth.
Lord Shiva said, ‘I had kept this form to kill demons, but as per your wish, now I will reside here in this form.’
Saying this, Lord Shiva revealed a beautiful pond which was filled with water as clear as milk. Lord Shiva said – ‘Whoever will visit this pond after seeing me and will drink the water of this pond thrice with the Anjali of both his right and left hands, he will give a telegram to the ancestors of three clans. By drinking water with his left hand, he will save his mother’s side, by drinking water with his right hand, he will save his father and grandfather etc. and by drinking water with both his hands, he will save himself.’ Various parts of Lord Shankar in the form of Mahish were established in five places which are called ‘Panch Kedar’. ‘Are considered.
Indra said ‘Lord! I will come here from heaven every day and worship you and will also drink the water of this pond. You have come here in the form of Mahish and said ‘Ke Darayami’, hence you will be famous by the name Kedar.’
Lord Shiva said: ‘If you do this, you will not have any fear of demons and your body will become extremely strong.’
Even today Indra comes daily to worship Shiva.
Indra built a beautiful temple for Lord Kedareshwar and went to heaven. Since then, he comes regularly every day and worships Lord Shiva and after drinking water from that pond three times, he returns to heaven.
One day when Indra came for puja, he saw that the entire mountain peak, the idol of God, the temple, the pond – everything was covered with snow. Then, feeling extremely sad, he bowed to the direction of the Deity of the Lord and returned to Indralok. In this way, he would come every day for four months and after not seeing Lord Shiva, he would return after paying obeisance in that direction. When the summer season came, he saw the idol of Lord Kedareshwar. He performed the puja with great ceremony and musical instruments. Lord Shiva again became pleased and asked Indra to ask for a boon.
Indra said-‘Lord! This mountain remains very picturesque from Chaitra month to eight months, then from the solstice of Scorpio to the solstice of Aquarius it becomes inaccessible even for me, then leave alone the common man. Therefore, during these four months, you should reside somewhere else in the mortal world in this form so that there is no hindrance in my promise of daily worship.
Lord Shiva said – ‘We have Hatkeshwar area in Anartadesh, there I will always reside from the Sankranti of Scorpio till the Sun is in Aquarius. Therefore, build my temple there and establish my form in it and keep worshiping me. For you, I will establish my glory in that Shivalinga.
As per the promise of Lord Shiva, Indra built a temple in Hatkeshwar and established the Kedar form of Lord Shiva. He also constructed a pond, took bath with that water and drank the water thrice. Satisfied with the worship of Indra, Lord Kedar reached the area.
As long as there is summer and rain, Lord Shiva stays in the Kedar region of the Himalayas, but during winter he comes to the Hatkeshwar region. (In winter, the movable idol of Kedarnathji comes to Ushimath. It is here that he is worshiped throughout the winter season.)
